Exhibition information

Lindy Lee: The Myriad Stars in the Myriad Worlds is the first major international solo exhibition of one of Australia’s most important contemporary Chinese-Australian artists – Lindy Lee. It also marks the first time that an Australian contemporary artist has been presented in China on such a large scale.

Born in Brisbane to Chinese immigrant parents, Lindy Lee’s life and career reflect not only the challenges of forging an artistic path as a member of the Chinese diaspora in Australia, but also the profound journey of awakening and artistic practice of an individual artist.

In this century of searching for understanding and inclusivity, Lindy Lee’s artistic path and her work open up a profound way of conversing with the universe and all beings within it. At the core of her practice lies an exploration of the deep connections between humanity and the cosmos. Her work spans painting, sculpture, installation, and public art. The ideas embodied in her creations draw on the deep traditions of both Chinese and Australian cultures, while also embracing a profound understanding of Zen Buddhism, a deep affection for Indigenous Australian cultural traditions, reverence for nature, and an acceptance of destiny.

This exhibition offers audiences Lindy Lee’s unique invitation to experience “a profound and intimate encounter with the universe.” Having already fallen in love with Chengdu, Lindy has created brand-new, large-scale works especially for the galleries of A4 Art Museum.

The exhibition is curated by Dr. Shen Qilan, a renowned curator and scholar.

Lindy Lee:  The Wholeness of Being

    Text: Dr. Shen Qilan

You and I are the myriad stars in the myriad worlds.

Within the luminous cosmos created by Lindy Lee, she invites us to reach toward the infinite, to behold our original essence: Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going?

Rather than an answer, Lindy Lee offers a path—a way toward illumination and self-realization.

The exhibition The Myriad Stars in the Myriad Worlds invites audiences to journey along Lindy Lee’s path: her origins, her destinations, and the innermost ground of our shared being.

Lindy Lee steps forth from the rainforests of Australia. Her works are infused with the elemental forces of nature: wildfires and floods have shaped not only the Australian land but also her art. Her rain and fire paintings series are co-creations with nature, alliances with contingency, and experiments in surrendering to the cosmos. The Australian land is the primal source of power in her works. In this exhibition, her explorations of diverse materials and her profound grasp of materiality reveal a profoundly avant-garde spirit.

Lindy Lee steps forth from the vast blue ocean. Her works carry the centuries-long history of the Chinese diaspora—their journeys, hardships, and migrations. In her art, skin and identity become bridges toward reconciliation. Her insights into humanity transcend attachment on identity; her compassion for the lives within her family history goes beyond critique of art history. Her True Ch’ien series is an autobiography of the soul, where home and family form the root of her love.

Lindy Lee steps forth from the wisdom of Zen practice. She cherishes the contradictory, loves paradoxes and enlightenment, and treasures dawns filled with hundreds of birds. In the depths of her heart, she has touched her own choices: a gathering of mind, a vanishing of self, where the artist must transcend all appearances—ethnicity, gender, rainforest, or a gold medal. A new cosmos is born within, calling us: to experience wholeness, to become wholeness itself. Matter has its nature; humans have inherent emptiness. To touch the cosmos is to discover: I have always been one of the myriad stars.

Lindy seeks to create the wondrous moment of union—the ultimate beauty of merging with the cosmos, the fullness of existence. In that moment, identity dissolves, the “I” disappears, and only the gentle flow of stars remains, moving softly until the end of time.

Through her monumental installations, Lindy Lee brings this moment into being. Whether in Moonlight Deities or in Luminescence Room, that moment descends: when people, across times and spaces, are bound together by karmic consequences and joined heart to heart, no longer divided by identities or notions.

Humanity has been torn apart by “identity” and “concepts.” The self and the subject ceaselessly strive for conquest and victory in the world, while at the same time severing life from existence itself. To rediscover a complete existence is a lesson every person must learn. Lindy’s path seeks to heal the wounds and separations history has left upon humanity, to make life richer through paradox and contradiction.

Her works, like her life, are filled with compassion. They embody both an eternal beauty and an urgent attentiveness to the present, resonating deeply with the history and culture of Chengdu. This exhibition compels us to reflect on the essence of art and of life itself—vast, profound, and filled with awe.

Lindy’s cosmos is expansive and radiant, yet it seeks to conquer no one. She hopes each visitor will feel her warm embrace and receive the cosmos’s deep reply.

Humble in spirit, Lindy wishes to create connection, not conquest: connection between the self and the cosmos, between koalas and pandas, between rainforest and starlit sky, between all beings and you and me.

Thus, the myriad stars and you and I, encounter here—become one.
