Introduction

While walking in nature, birdwatching is not merely a visual pursuit—it requires one to open their ears and listen. ‘Birding by ear’ is a fascinating journey in its own right. Even when birds remain concealed, their songs allow us to perceive their presence within the same temporal and spatial framework. The question of why birds sing is equally captivating, and the most effective way to seek the answer is through continuous observation and learning.
Following a morning of acoustic immersion, we will organise the sounds collected and utilise music boxes as a medium to create ‘sound images’. Together, we shall exchange our captured recordings, compose musical scores, and perform whilst listening to one another’s ‘translations’ of the natural world.

  • Artist Profile

    HU Qindi

Based in Hangzhou, Qindi Hu specialises in recording daily landscapes across various media, including paper, woodblocks, copperplates, photographic paper, and thread. Her previous works have consistently been linked to the cities she inhabits, utilising walking as a narrative thread to document the trees, flora, and fauna found in everyday life.
Since birdwatching became an integral part of her lifestyle, avian themes have permeated her daily creations; meanwhile, her geographical records have expanded in tandem with the presence of various birds in different locations. Much like her recordings, binoculars have become an extension of her sight and hearing, capturing the essence of encountering another species. She presents the forms, silhouettes, sounds, and habitats of birds through sketches, printmaking, paper works, and installations.
