Introduction

What kind of sound does a woodpecker produce? Beyond their vocal calls, is the rhythmic drumming of different species upon the trees identical?
Most of us possess at least one unforgettable memory of an encounter with a bird. By sharing our respective recollections and discussing the habits and habitats of various species, we will determine the ‘protagonist’ for our cards. After mastering the techniques for constructing pop-up cards, we will synthesise these elements to create a bespoke work—complete with the bird’s unique sound. In a mere second, you will be transported back to that moment of happiness.

    HU Qindi

Based in Hangzhou, HU Qindi specialises in recording daily landscapes across various media, including paper, woodblocks, copperplates, photographic paper, and thread. Her previous works have consistently been linked to the cities she inhabits, utilising walking as a narrative thread to document the trees, flora, and fauna found in everyday life.
Since birdwatching became an integral part of her lifestyle, avian themes have permeated her daily creations; meanwhile, her geographical records have expanded in tandem with the presence of various birds in different locations. Much like her recordings, binoculars have become an extension of her sight and hearing, capturing the essence of encountering another species. She presents the forms, silhouettes, sounds, and habitats of birds through sketches, printmaking, paper works, and installations.
