2023 RE-CONNECT 《Sound Operating Matter》 Electroacoustic Improvisation Concert

Sound Manipulation of Matter is a concert proposal by Brazilian sound artist and musician Marcelo Armani that runs through the concepts of electroacoustic music, concrete music, Krautrock and Ambient, employing experimental compositional techniques in the fields of sound art, improvisation and iPad music.
Supported by interfaces, music modeling and editing resources, analog and digital languages, artists are constantly shifting and reproducing intentions for improvisation. In this case, the outcome of each concert is unique. Each element dedicated to sound creation is rooted in the philosophy of ephemerality, action in the moment, the “cause of error”, and a continuous listening to the materiality of sound as principles and feedback in the construction of the narrative process.
Sound Manipulation of Matter is a sensory invitation that suggests the deconstruction of sound abstraction and inserts into the realm of perception of the plasticity and spatial nature of this physical phenomenon, interacting with the different forms and means of the sculptural practice of volume and traces on the material of space and time.

2023 RE-CONNECT 《Instant Composition – Finding the Sound of Chengdu Objects》Sound Performance

Instant Composition for Chengdu’s founded objects (Speaking Object Orchestra, Phase 1). Acoustic performance with prepared objects on a table.
Sounds are always in situ. They always take life in a physical space but they also carry in them the memory of a space. Everyday objects and sounds are part of our memories and they participate in the construction of our identity.

The acoustic performance moves found items into sounds instruments and is created from a minimal instrumentarium made of small things collected by myself in several locations of Chengdu – as Quingcheng mountain, Luxelakes or the Down Town. The gestures sequences build a visual and sound experience dealing with potentials of the place. The surface of my table becomes a miniature territory where the strategies of displacement shape an instant composition that appears and transforms constantly as well as Chengdu’s urban landscape. Based on cyclic gestures in a resonant space, actions accelerates the wear of these objects through frictions, while resounded the space and stretching the time perception. It binds audience, locations and memories together to recreates a new temporal and affectiv narrative.

2023 RE-CONNECT《Life / Performance· Superfluous Activities 》Workshop

How does the city’s landscape affect our lives? How can we carry out these very necessary non-essential leisure activities? Have you ever doubted the reality of the real world you live in?
Inspired by the 17th-century literati Wen Zhenheng’s “Chronicles of Long Things” and Sun Kehong’s “Idle Qing Lessons”, the works are inspired by the 17th-century literati Wen Zhenheng’s “Chronicles of Long Things” and Sun Kehong’s “Idle Qing Lessons”, and are based on literati activities such as night tours, rests, painting appreciation, and tea tasting.
Throughout his life, Wen Zhenheng collected, evaluated, and described the activities of the literati elite of his time in their daily lives, jokingly saying that what he recorded were superfluous useless things and activities (long things). Nowadays, when art is no longer an elite activity, when we all become clusters of data under the control of algorithms, living in a world that emphasizes productivity and takes competition and progress as the rules of the game, we advocate that human beings have the universal right to waste time and energy in useless and excessive activities. We hope to draw on the spirit of Man Chun-hang’s record of “The Chronicle of Long Things”, pay attention to the seemingly ordinary and insignificant things in daily life, and appreciate the beauty in them.
Based on the demo of “Anthology of Useless Activities”, the Switchoffthelight Art Group plans to create a new local version, combining the characteristics of Chengdu’s local “leisure” and “fireworks”, and constructing an experience path according to the characteristics of the site, inviting participants to enter the “theater in the city”, open their senses, and embark on a journey of discovery. Participatory performance breaks down the boundaries of spectatorship, contributing to the work through joint participation, and the audience’s participatory experience and response become part of the performance aesthetics.
“Drift” is an instinctive exploration of urban space, a technique that actively shuttles between different environments, and “listening” opens a channel. We hope that through this residency, we can intervene in life with a stroll, and inspire a new vision of the city and life. This will also be Switchoffthelight’s first restart in three years.

2023 RE-CONNECT 《A Talk After Hot Pot Banquet》Film Shooting

Hot pot is a slow cooking method which features a simmering pot of soup stock at the dining table, and a variety of raw ingredients. The warm atmosphere makes people feel comfortable and relaxed by chatting, eating and drinking around the table. Here, hotpot serves as a tool of communication and establishes connections. While eating together represents a way of socially interacting, food sharing suggests social integration of people from different backgrounds. For instance, artist Rirkrit Tiravanija cooked Thai meals for visitors in 303 Gallery (1992), providing participants with ‘a specific social space’. Comparatively, more recent socially engaged art projects have embodied social values for the public to contemplate their own situatedness, such as Conflict Kitchen (Rubin & Weleski, 2010). Hotpot culture is very popular in the Chinese community in the UK and Jiang carried out an art practice related to the Hotpot Banquet in London: Hanxuan Jiang, Kai Wang and Bingyang Li are at a happy, relaxing hot pot banquet (2019). They cooperated in cooking and shooting while sharing opinions on filmmaking, food and emotions.
By sharing food, we can activate the communication between individuals and reunderstand the way we get along with others. The project uses hot pot as a medium to open a deep dialogue between individuals, trying to understand the relationship between people and find our place in daily life. As the signature food of Chengdu, hot pot creates a sense of cultural connection and familiarity among strangers sitting together. It allows some people to meet and have a sincere exchange.
The Hotpot Banquet will invite six participants who join Hanxuan Jiang’s “Conversations in the Kitchen” project, and the public is welcome to join the talk after Hot Pot Banquet.

2023 RE-CONNECT 《Returning to the Embrace of Nature to Relax and Sleep soundly》Siesta Concert

Siesta means noon break in Spanish, which comes from the Latin word hora sexta. In the Roman calendar, it corresponds to the sixth hour starting from early morning.

Artist Marcelo Armani invites those who are interested in attending the concert to relax for a lunch break. In a period of 2 hours, the artist will use the frequency layer of the low-frequency spectrum, combined with sound clips collected in nature, to reproduce and create a series of music in real-time for the audience to listen to and fall asleep.
During these 2 hours, participants are free to enter and exit the room, and everyone is free to enjoy the concert, or just use this time to relax and take a nap before starting other work. The inspiration comes from the artist’s personal practice of listening to electronic music works before going to bed, and this event also breaks the characteristics of traditional forms of electronic and experimental music. Therefore, this is an experience based on free sharing, focusing on the sensory level provided by sound.

2023 RE-CONNECT《A Poetic Encounter, A Daydream》Screening and Talk

We navigate through different cultural backgrounds and values, where the individual is fragmented, fluid, changeable, and displaced. How can individuals in post-society access stable affective connections, a deep sense of belonging, and a reliable, ideal life?
Emotion is a vast domain. It can be the romance felt between lovers, the warmth and happiness shared among close friends, the strength and heroism found within a collective, or the serendipitous delightful encounter with strangers. This is a continuously clustering, dynamic process of interaction. Hanxuan Jiang hopes to genuinely feel her existence through these encounters, connections, and emotional bonds. She believes filming is not just about documenting conversations, emotions, and moments in time; it is a gateway to explore sincere interactions with others. The camera helps measure the boundaries and trust between me and ‘them’, the filmed and captured. Personal life seems very individualistic, but the conversations, reflections, and introspections encountered in daily life inevitably reflect society at large. These private matters reveal individual dilemmas, struggles, aspirations, determination, wanderings, and imaginations, unfolding genuine conversations amidst subtle emotions.
We hope that participants will resonate with the flowing images and magnified individual emotions.
We invite you to join us in a nocturnal daydream.

2023 RE-CONNECT《Plastic Water Bottle》Collection Event

2023 RE-CONNECT《Conversation in the Kitchen III》Art Video Project Participant Recruitment

“Conversation in the Kitchen” is a three-year “participatory video” art project by A4 artist-in-residence Jiang Hanxuan in Latvia and Oxford, UK: understanding people’s daily interactions through the specific space of the kitchen.
As an indispensable space in the house, the kitchen is a familiar but easily overlooked “mediator of emotional communication”. In this project, the artist hopes that through the conversation in the kitchen, people can draw out the connection of individual emotions, think about the importance of the kitchen in people’s interactions, and make everyone rethink the function, function and boundary of the kitchen space.
This project not only hopes that the participants will be the “subjects” in the short film, but also expects everyone to experience the process of filming and even editing together. I hope that everyone can create a relaxed environment where they can express their ideas equally.

2023 RE-CONNECT 《The Second Game》screening and post-screening

“The Second Game” is an invited work for the “Drama Online” unit of the 2021 Beijing International Youth Theatre Festival and the offline performance of the Hangzhou Theatre Festival, based on a juvenile delinquency case that occurred in the Liulichang area of Beijing in 2006. The work attempts to retrace the brutal abuse and killing of the past through the perspective of the abuser’s peers.
“Fifteen years ago, the case sparked a lively discussion about urban change, youth education, and people began to think about the impact of urbanization on the next generation. Fifteen years later, inspired by Milo Rau and other documentary theatres, I decided to invite six teenagers aged 13-17 to join the work and re-enter the case from their perspective. During the rehearsal process, their authenticity and honesty made me feel at times happy, sometimes sentimental, sometimes frightened, and even self-doubting. I find that they differ from adults only in that they have not yet learned to pretend to be self-controlled. In the end, she decided to give up all the creative ‘meanings’ such as the structure, mechanism, and additional meaning that she had thought about in advance, and only reached the connection between the case and reality through these actors.
The arrogance of adults can cause harm, consciously or unconsciously, and adults often forget that they have also been hurt by this self-righteousness. It’s not a ‘pleasant’ piece, but it might remind you of memories you thought didn’t exist. ”

2023 RE-CONNECT 《Farewell, Outsiders, Tao: From Cultural Identity to Social Relations》 in dialogue between Chinese and German writers

Exploring origins and belonging, we constantly search for the footsteps of our ancestors and the roots of our cultural identity.Embracing love and loss, we continue to delve into the gradually fading memories of our family history. From Germany to China, from family to lineage, from cultural identity to social relationships, each of our stories contributes to a vast collective memory. Where do these stories begin? And how do “I” find my place among them?
Yannic Han Biao Federer’s novel “TAO” is a story about origins and belonging, love and loss. It follows his search for traces along the fractures of his biography and the gaps in history, in Germany and Hong Kong. He started writing in order to make sense of his own family history. His novel “TAO” asks questions about how to narrate collective memory, who does memory belong to, and what is the commitment of memory.

We have invited translator and writer Li Hao, as well as novelist, playwright, and poet Yu Song, to engage in a dialogue with him. The authors will discuss and share their perspectives on topics such as cultural identity and social relationships.

2023 RE-CONNECT 《Contradiction and Tension: Sebastian Mahaluf’s Performance Art Experience》

“The way I approach the world is by measuring the space around me. Performance can vividly showcase all the possibilities in this process. Every time a work is completed, many unforeseeable things happen. When the elastic rope constantly tightens the connection between participants, it largely restores our situation in the world, not only reflecting our social style, but also triggering us to think about our relationship with space.”
The connection between people and external things is like the relationship between performers and elastic ropes. In fact, each of us is this connection point, this intersection point. At the beginning of life, there is no self-awareness. Since the emergence of self-awareness, this consciousness has separated the connection between the intersection of the self and others, and the self and others are split into opposing entities. So trapped in oneself, feeling lonely.

In fact, we often overlook that everything is the intersection of interconnected networks, where we are closely connected, interconnected, and integrated. We were originally “interconnected” and “closely related”. I hope everyone can re-examine our connections and realize that we are one and all things are one by participating in this event.

2023 RE-CONNECT《Freedom Through Movement》Workshop

Nicolas Faubert has recognized that the foundational techniques of specific dance styles don’t resonate with all participants. Therefore, he introduces an approach centered around freedom of expression, which gradually becomes the core focus of the workshop.
Crafting Your Own Bodily LanguageThis workshop goes beyond mere aesthetics and spatial utilization. It incorporates elements of visualization and draws upon the participants’ daily life experiences, which are rich in information that enables true freedom of movement. In this way, each individual has the opportunity to develop their own “bodily alphabet.”
Improvisation: The Body as an InstrumentIn an environment that encourages open exchange, the workshop promotes the practice of bodily improvisation. Each participant is invited to view their body as a unique instrument, thus becoming the creator of their own physicality—a living, moving work of art that can integrate into various settings and contexts.
Explore and Understand Yourself Through DanceThe workshop provides opportunities for experimentation, allowing participants to get to know themselves better through concepts like flow and gravity, in relation to space, time, and music. This paves the way for a form of abstraction and personal transcendence.
Evolving Dance: Reactivity and TransformationFrom this amalgamation of genres and artistic hybridizations, an evolutionary dance practice emerges. It adapts and transforms in response to its environment, offering a dynamic and enriching experience for all participants.

Simple language, ordinary and trivial details of life, “Our Town” contains the most essential poetry of life in the narration.
In this workshop, we will get to know each other, read the work aloud together, and try to rehearse some of the fragments. At the same time, we will start from the text of this work and extend it to our own lives, trying to incorporate real life materials into our creations to prepare for long-term rehearsals later.

2023 RE-SALON《Asking the World Questions in the Scene of Life》

Long time no see, how’s it going?
The fourth phase of A RE-SALON is still gathering in the familiar living room, asking questions from the world and waiting for each other’s responses
In this issue, the four questioning friends use the “10+1” discussion model to bring ideas and feelings in different fields: music, vision, life, and action…… The concentration of the exchange rises sharply
Respond to curiosity with questions, and see thoughts that have been forgotten in the crevices of life

2023 RE-CONNECT《Sophie Scholl and White Rose》Exhibition,Film Screening and Talk

Sophie Scholl was a member of the resistance group “White Rose” during the Nazi era in Germany. Her actions have inspired generations and continue to hold significance today. She became a symbol of brave civilian resistance and opposition to Hitler’s dictatorship, not only in politics but also in everyday life.
The biography exhibition “Sophie Scholl and the White Rose” delves into the personal experiences behind this iconic figure of the time. The exhibition consists of 14 display boards that tell the story of how Sophie Scholl courageously opposed war and dictatorship without hesitation. What personal experiences shaped her? What beliefs made her disregard her own safety? In life-threatening circumstances, what gave her support and hope? Through Sophie Scholl’s own poignant letters and diary excerpts, the exhibition portrays a young woman who fearlessly resisted the Nazi regime. The displayed photographs from family archives offer insights into the mundane and private moments of her life.
The film “Sophie Scholl: The Final Days” (2005), directed by Marc Rothemund, strives to adhere closely to historical facts (based on original interrogation records) while presenting the story as a drama. With sharp insight and a fresh historical interpretation, the young director Marc Rothemund successfully portrays the near-legendary historical figure, Sophie Scholl. The film won two Silver Bears at the Berlin Film Festival in 2005: Best Director for Marc Rothemund and Best Actress for Julia Jentsch. It also received a nomination for the Golden Bear and an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006.

2023 RE-CREATE 《Moving Chengdu Soundscape》

TRANS(OBRE)POR is a sound installation proposed by artist Marcelo Armani that unfolds in an edition format. In this installation, the artist uses a total of six independent audio channels as poetry to spatialize each of the 10 movements that narrate the 33’15” of this sound piece.

2023 Luxelakes Community Documentary Exhibition 《Lotus, Waterfront, Who? 》

My daily life, simple and ordinary, is like a water lily by the water.

There is always time each day to walk to the lake and soak up the fresh air.

“Look there!”

Three or five children laughed and played on the shore, observing the changes in their surroundings as if their fun was to find and follow the ripples in the water.

Occasionally, people meditate and rest by the water’s edge, which is the best way to relieve the fatigue of the day.

Here, there are not only lakes and flowers, but also you, enjoy this tranquility with me.

2024 RE-CONNECT《SHIFTING IMAGES》

Shifting Images was started by the artist Michel Marang and it is an overall musical and visual program, consisting of six new pieces for clarinets, electronics and photo sequences.
As diverse as the composers and their styles are, the thread through this program is formed by the shifting patterns that occur in every single piece. They are visualized in photo sequences, each with its theme, which will be projected simultaneously with the live performance of the pieces. The relationship between music and image can be entirely different in each piece, and based on form, concept or just text. However, music has always been the starting point. As a result, the image does not have the dominating position that it so often has in film, video and other art forms.

2024 OPEN-class “Inspiration & Material Storage Workshop”

Community life is rich and colorful, how to grab inspiration? How to find creative materials from life?

The material and inspiration collection workshop will help everyone find topics from life, sort out ideas, and precipitate their own community literature~

2024 OPEN-class “Art Community Project”

Open minds, information sharing, knowledge exchange, inspiration links, story weaving, “toolbox” exploration, group meetings – this will be a lesson plan that doesn’t make sense! A4 Art Museum and A4 International Art Residency Center jointly launched the “OPEN-class” art community program to launch our community dialogue and collaborative experiments.
From curriculum to curation, from skills to organization.
In the community, residents often ask, “How can we let people know our story?” How can I plan an event or exhibition? “And that often means a lot of problems – lack of channels, no guidance, and no idea where to start…… In the face of these difficulties, we need a platform to let more people see, hear, and remember every day.
The exhibition is never a simple creative work, it includes curating, coordinating, designing, editing, shooting, and other work from different latitudes and angles, which not only requires certain personal skills, but also needs to master more knowledge and carry out greater teamwork. Therefore, the “OPEN-class” program introduces more practical application courses, inviting professional curators, artists, and interdisciplinary practitioners to help participants understand each other from the curatorial, implementation and even practical parts, and deeply link their own social and life experiences with curatorial learning, so as to resonate with more people. In the future, we will set up a special collaborative group to discuss related topics related to the exploration of images, object narratives, nature, and the body. At the same time, the “OPEN-class Class” will also become a part of the 2024 Luhu Community Co-creation Documenta, using each other’s lives and stories to form a common memory of this community.

2024 RE-CONNECT《Starlight Music》Sofa Sonata Vol.9

Eternity and moments are intertwined, starlight and music resonate. Sift out the classic notes in the river of time and savor the touching moments in the long years. At night, under the stars, listen to the beautiful melodies and dance with the music. The delicate soul of the song is interpreted to the depths of the listener’s heart. The harmony and beauty of music across time and space give hope to a dull mind or a tired body. In the midst of the world, there is peace and belonging in the vastness of the heavens and the earth.
In the height of summer in August, Daisy, who is elegant, sensual and loves life, will interpret the beauty of classical music with her violin. Together with the pianist in the Residency Parlour, she will demonstrate the ingenious combination of keyboard and bowed strings.

2024 RE-CONNECT《Night of Frame Drums》Sofa Sonata Vol.7

In ensemble chamber music, the piano, violin, and drums respectively play the roles of the muscles, bones, and heart of the musical composition. Different instruments interpret various layers of the musical piece through distinct expressive logics in the arrangement, and their players have different habits of expression. When these musicians, each representing different layers and textures of the music, pick up the same instrument, the frame drum, what new chemical reactions might their unique musical logics bring to the music?

2024 RE-CONNECT《Liucija Kvašytė OPEN STUDIO》

During the open studio, Lucija will present the results of her residency: project ‘365’ – clothes captured for a month lay on cardboard sheets in order to reconsider their meaning and need to construct the user’s image.

2024 RE-SALON《Turning Point: The Development and Challenges of Chinese Art Residencies》Residency Annual Forum

“Turning Point” refers to both a transition in time and a site of experimentation in space. The development and challenges of Chinese art residencies unfold precisely at this turning point. In 1978, China embarked on its reform and opening-up, ushering in an era of unprecedented freedom and innovation opportunities for contemporary Chinese art within the context of socio-economic transformation. Artists began to break free from traditional constraints, pursuing individual expression and intellectual freedom. As a new artistic ecosystem, art residencies began to take root and flourish within China’s artistic landscape.

The development of Chinese art residencies has followed a unique path, advancing in parallel in both urban and rural areas, leading to a vibrant and diverse art ecosystem. However, challenges such as insufficient funding and the sustainability of projects have long been a concern for art residencies practices. Moreover, ensuring that artistic works genuinely reflect local culture, rather than becoming mere exports of external cultural influences, remains a pressing issue for residency institutions. In the context of globalization, Chinese art residencies face challenges related to localization and methodological dilemmas. Residency institutions and projects must continue to focus on the depth of artistic expression. At the same time, they need to address the complex relationship between art, society, culture, and economy, as well as art’s impact on social progress and cultural heritage.

2024 RE-SALON《Cross-border integration: the innovative road from art to life》

RE-SALON still meets in the familiar living room, asking questions and waiting for each other’s responses and discussions.
In this issue,  Artists and friends from different fields share and ask questions
How can artist transition to the service industry?
How to relate to local comprehensive materials and resident art?
Can modern supermarkets learn something from Chinese markets ?
When art residency opens a window for the community, what do you expect ?……

Each question addresses cross-border integration and innovation, and how to draw on experience and inspiration from different fields. Each question explores how art, life and community services can be brought together to create new possibilities and value.

2024 RE-CONNECT《Live Film Music vs. Life as a Film Composer 》Sofa Sonata Vol.10

How do you turn an improvised idea consisting of just a couple of notes played on a piano into an elegiac piece of music for orchestra, while making sure it fits the scene it is intended to support?
And how do you sleep at night when you know that an already tight schedule has basically been cut in half because your taking over from someone else who has been working on that project before but didn’t get approved?
Taking a film that is both, part fictional, part documentary and it’s music that is both, part symphonic and part minimalistic in nature as an example, we will hear some of this music performed live, take a look at its creation and discuss a number of common questions related to the work of a film composer. These can be both artistic or pragmatic in nature. And few of the answers might surprise you.

2024 RE-CONNECT《WardrObey The Wardrobe as a Tool for Activism》Painting Workshop

Liucija Kvašytė is a fashion designer and researcher from Lithuania whose work focuses on criticizing consumerism in the fashion world. In the modern consumerist society, people have mountains of clothes, but only wear a few items.
The workshop “Wardrobe as a Tool for Activism” invites the audience to share their favorite clothes and related stories and draw them, in order to push the participants to rethink their relationship with clothes.

2024 RE-CONNECT《From Waste to Art》Intaglio Printing Workshop

During the workshop you will learn the basic understanding for intaglio printing. Traditionally intaglio prints are made with copper or zink plates by engraving the image manually or chemically onto the surface. We will use our everyday waste material to transform them into printing plates by cutting them with scissors and scalpels and modify them with engravings tools.
Participants should collect their own waste like flat plastics, foil, sheet metal and milk cartons. Any flat or soft material can be used as a printing plate.

2024 RE-CONNECT《Echo of Aluminium Sea》Art Performance

In this art scene, Chinese dynamic installation artist Li Sizhu and German musician Matthias Petsche will jointly present art scenes and exchanges that integrate images, film music, improvisations and art installations in multiple dimensions. The audience will immerse themselves in the multi-sensory art experience brought by mixed media and projection.

2024 RE-CONNECT《Eternal Nocturne》Interactive Audio Installation

Dreams play an extremely important role for each of us as individuals as well as collectively as societies. They let us envision future, connect to the past, explore unconscious hopes and wishes.

The audio installation invites all visitors to participate in either or both of two ways. Firstly to create a personal soundtrack for their dreams from an endless stream of musical layers which are in turn created from a huge number of heavily manipulated and reshaped snippets taken from Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 55 No. 1 in f Minor. Secondly, the installation offers a safe space for sharing dreams, ideas, hopes, or wishes. They’ll become an abstract and untraceable part of the artwork.

2024 RE-CONNECT《Flags Fluttering》Workshop

Every child has their own little kingdom. As the 10th iSTART Children’s Arts Festival comes to a close, A4 resident artist Ge Yulu will host a “Flags Fluttering” workshop with the community’s children on August 28. In this workshop, Ge Yulu will guide the children in creating flags for their own “Kingdom of Kids.”
The children will have the opportunity to select colors, carve prints, and ultimately create a unique flag for their kingdom. During this process, we aim to encourage the children to unleash their creativity and imagination of their own kingdom, expressing their understanding of themselves and the world, dreams and the future, through vibrant colors, patterns, and symbols.
Through the children’s creative thinking and hands-on skills, each flag will represent the unique spirit of each kingdom, presented in the purest and simplest form, igniting a passionate spark of thought and self-expression.

2024 RE-CONNECT《STUDIO OPEN》

2024 RE-CONNECT《Future of Listening》Workshop

People rely on sound every day to feel and experience life, and have a habitual attitude towards our use of sound, but in reality if at some point you get serious about understanding and feeling sound, you will reap the rewards of creating the future from sound.Isn’t that what creation itself is all about? We dissect it, understand its essence, and then artificially construct and create something that has no direct relationship or connection to it, and that is creation. So this time, our artist Carlo will lead SKD’s future artists to experience a sound workshop, to feel the precursor of technological development and integration into life.Of course, the event itself is also very high in “content”. You will learn about audio technology, experiment with it, and of course, the most exciting and innovative part is the interdisciplinary application. Artist will be able to interact with the physics of sound to understand its impact. This event is for anyone who is interested in or enjoys sound.

2024 RE-CONNECT 《Moss Music & Velvet City》Performance art performance

Moss Music:

At HeHuaChi 荷花池 market in downtown Chengdu you can buy almost anything, and on a visit there we immediately fell for the fake moss fabric that we found. Later on, we decided to use it for a new work. We built a wall-like structure, covered with moss, that will be quietly and autonomously moving around, as if it is on remote control. We even provided it with soft laid-back self-made music, which can be heard as it moves on by. The wall may merge with the plants and the park, but will also be a surreal presence. The Moss Music was made for the LUXE Lakes area that is perfectly designed and built, and where soft music can be heard everywhere. In the context of the park of the Jinsha Site Museum it might also bring to mind overgrown romantic ruins or remnants of disappeared structures.

Duration of the performance will be 45 to 60 minutes.

Velvet City:

In 1998 we were in Chengdu as budget travelers, and in 2024 we returned as artists, for the A4 residency. China has changed so enormously, that we wanted to make a work that focuses on what is still here of the Chineseness of China. We bought the bright red fabric with the elegant flower pattern, that we used in this work. It was interesting to hear that this fabric has a very distinct meaning. It is associated with how women used to dress in the past, with the North-Eastern part of China or the countryside in general. We also used red fringes and made a miniature city covered in red velvet that is placed on top of the sculpture. The living sculpture has no face and neither front nor back side. We made a 1-minute soundtrack for it, which is based on a traditional song that we learned from a group of elderly people, who we met when they made music in a park. The figure will stand still, and will come to life whenever the music plays. Its movements are subtle and slow. It might also bring to mind the columns of Tibetan temples or figures from the Sichuan opera.

2024 RE-CONNECT《Wandering Spririts》performance art performance

The starting point for our second work for our Chengdu residency was the long strings of artificial flowers in bright yellow and orange, that we found at the He Hua Chi market. We started with making the flower garments. Having made the heads, a more grotesque and strange aspect was added, as if they were characters from a Japanese Anime film, that are both cute and scary. It is said that Wandering Spirits wander aimlessly through the world, but are neither friendly nor unfriendly.

The two figures in yellow and orange will walk, following a rhythm of five steps forward and three steps backward as if they are doing a simple ritual dance.

2024 RE-CREATE《Artist Sharing Session》

Li Sizhu, a dynamic installation artist in the United States, and Chen Liuyi, an art theory researcher, held an open sharing session in the form of OPEN STUDIO in the exhibition hall of CPI, introducing the important works, traveling exhibition projects and project experiences of their artistic careers to the visitors with an open attitude and perspective.
Artist Li Sizhu and curator Liu Yi had an interesting conversation about the development of contemporary art in Chengdu. Sizhu shared her artistic thoughts and explorations with you, and she will present her work “Moonment” in this art season, which is inspired by the ancient poem of Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Jiuling, “The Moon is Born on the Sea, and the End of the World is at this time”. This work depicts a surreal and poetic seascape at night, which is expected to resonate with people in different places.
It is worth mentioning that through this art season, Sizhu, who is a native of Sichuan, has connected with middle school classmates who have not seen him for more than 10 years, and many years of overseas life have shortened the time and space distance between people through creation…

2024 RE-CREATE《Heterotopia Another Type of Life》Sharing Session

Ge Yulu felt the contradictions and tensions presented in his work “Another Life” during his residency, and he asked the visitors that he hoped to promote reflection and discovery—to reflect on the current situation of life and discover other possibilities of life.

Qi Fan, the designer of CPI, talked about Burning Man, which is filled with crying, silence, and mourning, and the whole space seems to have an enchantment; At the moment when the temple burned down, designer Qi Fan suddenly realized that “space will produce divinity and spirituality”. Correspondingly, the CPI had an impact on him – after the economic tide passed, he found that what everyone needs in modern society is a calm aesthetic that can even have some minor flaws; Then in the process, the designer will be asked to weaken the extreme part of the self.

He said that each space has its own spiritual power, and it needs to be expressed by the architecture itself. Correspondingly, Ge Yulu mentioned that because things are multifaceted, we must also accept the grayscale of things themselves; This may be another expression of the heterotopianism of another life.

2024 RE-CREATE《Residency and Site-Specificity Starting From the Chengdu-Chongqing Region》Conversation

Starting from the Sichuan-Chongqing area, from the station to the locality. Cui Fuli, an independent curator and art critic, mentioned three key words, the first of which is “locality”, and he mentioned that the local project is not just to create a work, but a truly mobile testing ground. In addition, he also mentioned that residency is also an expression of local fair “dialogue”, and the possibility of defining the current situation and future direction of art professionals in the gap between the old and the new with “rupture”.
As a curator of the younger generation, Li Han responds to the thinking about “fracture”, and uses the thinking of the new generation to reflect on the comprehensive application of innovation and sustainability. In the dual scenario of facing costs and the solidification of original thinking, “rupture” means solving more substantive problems and innovating ways.

2024 RE-CREATE《FASHIONISTA》Clothing Workshop

From conveying warmth to expressing attitude, clothes not only wrap the body, but also the soul that yearns for creation and flow. An open costume workshop led by Guda & Frans led the participants to make their own “art” works with friends and children from outside the city.
In the limited time, I made clothes that could express my attitude, put on my own works, and started a dream journey on the island, accepting the doubts, surprises, and explorations in the eyes of tourists in the process…… Accompanied by the beat of musical drums, young people dressed in fancy clothes show off their creations around the limited art island, these colorful, unique and uncomplicated sewing processes are like waiting for beauty and wonder to come, giving shape to the intangible with the individual.

2024 RE-CREATE《Sharing of the Sublime Fragments: About My Art Practice》Sharing Session

Artist Ren Han collaborated with CPI Haus101 for this special artwork and talked about the aesthetics anchored in the “sublime” in his space: aesthetically, the sublime is closer to the magnificent. By sharing Raphael’s Academy of Athens, the medieval maiden and the unicorn, and other famous European paintings, he demonstrated the initial understanding and feeling of the sublime in Western painting. Ren Han mentioned that the sublime is different from beauty in that it is not elegant or harmonious, but an experience that provokes awe, fear and even pain.
The sublime is defined as the opposite of beauty. The artist talked about the sublime aesthetics contained in Chinese landscape painting and the coexistence of man and nature under the concept of Taoism. Ren Han repeatedly mentions that art is truly complete when people are involved in the work; sublime art is not only distant and grandiose, but also needs to be appreciated and explored by human beings.

2024 RE-CREATE《What do you see in invisibility 》Artist Talk

Perceiving the intangible, empowering the intangible to become tangible, allowing art to be presented and expressed. The artist, Jun Honma, finds the hidden beauty of the intangible in nature. His work “Time and Boat” boat in this art season expresses the past, and he is like a container that carries old things. The sinking boat will disappear, which is related to time; and Time and Boat is a frozen moment!

Another artist, Pu Cheng, is very concerned about establishing a connection with the community. He believes that a common space links people and things together, forming tangible or intangible relationships. That’s why he emphasizes on generating communication with community residents and also focuses on creating spatial art. Collaboration as a working method is also a philosophy.

2024 RE-CREATE《Dots on a Table 》Painting Workshop

Table Dots is an outdoor participatory painting project that runs for 2 weeks during the art season. During this time, the dots on the giant table sculptures change daily. Here, rather than being a fixed state of being as a result, art has been transformed into a process in flux, and on October 10th, the partners from Azure came to the giant table and interacted with the artist Greta, learning that the dots were chosen not out of randomness, but because they are a friendly motif that is easy to draw for anyone of any age or status – dots are very easy to draw. friendly pattern – polka dots are very easy to draw.
Throughout the process, Greta invited children, community elders and brand partners to use brushes and paints to leave their mark and become part of a community of co-creators; a participatory painting project that breaks down social categorization and boundaries and creates new ways of equality and collaboration.

2024 RE-CREATE《Memory Crease》 Paper Art Workshop

Using origami to create a sustainable and knowledgeable back-and-forth – Icelandic artist Saga led partners from Fuhu’s “Red Man Program” to create China’s North, South East, West and North East, or Iceland’s “beak”. At the warm and inviting Cafe de Coucou, Saga and his friends from the Luhu community got to work creating the North, South East, West and East China in conversation!

Some friends used recycled Xinhua dictionaries to fold paper cranes; children created pants and holes in the wall out of old paper. …… Through each of the North-South-East-West-North projects, Saga felt the charm of re-creation, experienced the birth of sustainability in their hands, and enjoyed the slow life of escaping from the Internet for a moment, as the North-South-East-West-North projects were transformed into daily contemplation and upliftment.

2024 RE-CREATE《Explore The Charm of Film music 》Sharing Session

Matthias’ composition workshop is structured as an interactive, open-ended creative environment and is divided into two parts. First, Matthias gave an in-depth introduction to the nature of film music and several key compositional techniques. Through these techniques, participants were able to experience the relationship between the music and the film’s narrative, and as Matthias mentioned, although most compositions are semi-conscious or unconscious, it is important to know the rules.

In the second part of the hands-on session, Matthias led the participants to make conscious compositional choices as they watched a movie clip and then thought about how they could enhance the emotional expression of the scene by composing 2 notes. For example, what emotion does the scene convey? What effect do they want to convey by adding music? As the workshop progressed, participants gradually found their own creative voice through interaction and communication with each other, and realized that in a film narrative, music is not a matching tone, but an extension of the narrative itself. This open creative environment allowed everyone to express themselves freely, and at the same time inspired a deeper understanding of music and film.

2024 RE-CREATE《Mind Mixology》Food Theatre

On the afternoon after a rainy day, when the art season comes to an end, Jiawen and Xianjie engage in a mental game – specially tuned food theater – on the lawn next to the steps. The process starts with a glass of “blank” with sparkling water. The choice is between a “roll” or “lie flat” attitude, i.e. between coffee and whisky. Then mix all the flavors of life, sour, bitter, sweet, salty, 25 different seasonings: orange peel, mulberry, absinthe… Finally, inject the soul and blow a bubble on the drink.

Packed away in a cart, let it shake and mix with “your rhythm” during the walking process, and blend into a unique flavor with the current during the journey. This drink is ultimately a special drink of its own, we can not predict its final flavor, please enjoy the unknown, embrace the “ups and downs”. Children choose more sweet and sweet flavors, while adults pick the ingredients in sour and bitter-salty. Perhaps we all have the same attitude towards life, from the sweetness and joy of childhood to the mixed flavors of adulthood.

2024 RE-CREATE《The Story of Us and Leaf》 Painting Workshop

The rooftop of Hearthplate@CPI is wrapped in trees on a breezy autumn morning. Just like CPI’s respect for the location of the original trees, we believe that the living state of the trees is linked by the relationship between people and the trees, and the artist Ngai Frui Lian led the partners from Songtsam to reminisce and feel the location and connection of the trees in our life together.

After sharing the story of the creation of the “Tree Stories” series, Nivrillian brought her own acrylic texture prints, and using the leaves collected from CPI Island, invited the participants to paint their own “Tree Stories” on the canvas. Through tree stories, they change the way we see ourselves and the natural world, and can even help us understand each other in ecologically challenging times.

2024 RE-CREATE《Birds Radio – Draw Your Imaginary Bird》 Sharing Session

Examples of the performances shared show many levels of interculturalism, such as the different musical genres of the urban cultures of four continents, intercultural groups from three countries, and the theme of the program: migration, the difference of the audience – from all over the world. The rhythms of the Intercultural Theater are the result of the intertwining and fusion of different musical cultures, with salsa rhythms being the best example of the process of migration from all over the world, fusing the music of the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe. The performance takes on the theme of migration, and the state of insecurity.

Sharer Kai talked about how, as a universal reality, immigration is often the basis of intercultural practices. But you don’t have to migrate to another state to recognize other cultures; perhaps you just need to walk into a different community to experience the presence and impact of interculturalism.

2024 RE-CREATE《The Wardrobe as a Tool for Activism》 Painting Workshop

Liucija’s work often uses critiques of fashion consumerism, which helps participants better understand their relationship with clothes. The story of you and your favorite outfit will become part of the artist’s work. In a modern society where consumerism is prevalent, people have mountains of clothes, but only a few pieces that they actually wear often. The artist mobilized everyone to draw their favorite pieces on wooden boards, including cheongsams, sweaters, T-shirts, skirts, vests and more.

Everyone painted fashion pictures with colorful colors, thinking about their most frequently used and truly favorite clothes in the moment of creation, and weaving on the wooden boards was a vision of sustainability for our clothing. Participants took photos with the boards of the clothes they created, recording the creative process and moments. It was as if we were not only drawing clothes, but also imagining and envisioning a better and sustainable future.

2024 RE-CREATE《Artistic Residency and Creation in An International Perspective 》Conversation

The talk opened with the sharing of various international large-scale exhibitions, such as Documenta in Kassel, Germany, and other origins of overseas residencies. The three speakers talked about their respective residency programs and their life experiences at home and abroad. The residencies in different regions fed their diverse creative inspirations, which were ultimately combined with local characteristics and their own in-depth reflections on the region in their presentations.

During the exchange, some audience members asked what are the main types of residency programs? The guest speaker gave an in-depth answer, stating that in the Chinese context, the early residency programs were mostly opened in the form of pure painting; international creative programs are mostly visual arts, but there are also multi-dimensional art forms such as literature and music, etc. Residency programs usually seem to be in the same lineage with the curatorial programs of the traditional museums, but they are very different from each other.

2024 RE-CREATE《Birds Radio – Draw Your Imaginary Bird》 Painting Workshop

Birds Radio was born and developed at a special time, and it is a product of the emotional resonance of the group in a special context. At the same time, it explores the topics of earth, nature, human beings, biodiversity, and the community of life.

The painting workshop was opened by the music from nature – birdsong. Artist Liu Yi led the children in the community to recognize birds from all over the world at all times of the year, and to appreciate birds created by people – it could be ancient wine vessels, artists’ bird prints, and more importantly, art created in the ancient Greek period. art created during the ancient Greek period. Accompanied by moving and ethereal birds, artist Liu Yi encouraged everyone to listen to the sounds and imagine and paint the birds in their minds – birds that look like those in movies, courtship birds, blue owls, and even drunken blushing birds. As Mr. Liu Yi admired everyone’s work, he mentioned that everyone’s bird paintings had the feeling of self-portraits…. …

2024 RE-CREATE《Synthetic Biology Project 》Artist Workshop

In the Synthetic Organisms workshop, released in conjunction with the White House of Reading Recruitment, twelve participants were guided by the narrative and rules of the board game to experience a shift in identity and perspective from humans to the plants and animals of the ecosystem. Participants experience the evolution of the ecosystem and the critical choices in adapting and evolving as plants and animals. As the workshop moved into the futuristic scenario of 2054, participants faced an existential crisis in virtual and imaginary time and roles.

The workshop provides game cards that inspire the group to create their own path of species evolution using future AI technology. At the end of the workshop, the commands issued by the AI agent to each species prompted people to go outside and slowly reveal the contradictions in the narratives; thus, the participants began to think more deeply about the relationship between biology and technology.

The workshop was highly accommodating, and the complexity of the information was brought to light through the constant refinement and design of the interactive sessions, which ultimately allowed participants from different age groups to have an in-depth experience and contemplation of the complex issues of ecology, as well as to explore more about the future interaction between AI technology and the biological world.

2024 RE-CREATE《I Am Also Here》 Performance On-Site

Using the body as bait, exploring transgressive behavior. In the bluesy night, Kandi paints his whole body white, retaining the hollow blackness of the skeleton state, and holding the signage “I’m here too” in the state of wearing only an inch shirt. I’m Here Too” conveys the idea that ‘I’ exists in another form, only seemingly transgressing the boundaries. Our boundaries may be too clear and narrow; perhaps the body stretches out on the steps, expresses itself with the sign, sleeps on the steps, tastes the earth in the grass, dances on the stones… … This is a new interpretation of “crossing the border”.

In this state of silence, the audience’s applause is even slightly abrupt. When she approaches, people back away in fear; when she turns to explore, people are suddenly strict, and Kandi’s creation utilizes the imagination of social forms to push the action of exploring boundaries.

2024 RE-CREATE《Insta-maybe:When Cameras Play Hard to Ge》 Art Project On-Site

Chen Fenwan, who has been hailed by the media as “the top paper-cutting artist of the post-90s”, set up a Polaroid booth at the entrance of the CPI, where she created double-exposure Polaroid pictures with visitors. Because of the uncertainty of double exposure, the Polaroid may not be successful, good-looking or satisfying, and the process of creation is full of randomness, hence the name “Polaroid”.

The double-exposure filming process needs to be completed by the subject and the artist in cooperation, and the superimposed characters appearing in the filming are chosen by the previous subject: the whole creative production process produces a penetration, and after being filmed, you need to choose a word for the next guest, which will appear as the double-exposure superimposed characters of the next subject. ‘Love’, ‘Wish’, ‘Dream’, ‘Good’, ‘Love’ …… Words with various meanings together with the photographed person form the inspiration for Pink Pill’s artwork.

2024 RE-CREATE Youth in History Drama Writing Exchange

Zhao Chuan and Qondiswa James will be brought together live, and Anuja Ghosalkar and Pierre-Angelo Zavaglia will be hooked up through multimedia interactions. With their different skin colors, accents, laughter and pain, they have traveled across four continents and five countries, crossing long borders and barriers, trying to escape from their isolated existences and struggles to find a common destiny and an emotional resonance that can connect them. It was a voyage.

They began by looking back, meeting with stories of people from different places who had been seasoned and battered by life, people who were struggling to find their way in the sea of history and their youth. The interviewees include South African dreamers, musicians and activists, Bollywood actors and rappers who were born Muslims in India, Chinese New Wave artists of the 1980s, and Venezuelan immigrant mothers who traveled across the ocean. The interviews with these figures connect the efforts of seemingly unattainable people, and even more so, connect a common history – one in which the survivors stand up from the brutal, or melancholic, or passionate waves of youthful practice and history.

2024 RE-CONNECT《Listening to the sounds of nature》Sofa Sonata Vol.6

In the depth of the forest, sunlight filters through the foliage, casting dappled patterns, and the shadows of the trees sway gently, revealing the hidden veins of life in the interplay of light and shadow. Amid the damp mist, there are delicate murmurs—rainfall, the chirping of insects, and the gentle flow of a stream.

The sounds of life are nature’s own symphony. At night, when the city’s hustle and bustle comes to a close, nature begins its whispers in the A4 Residency’s living room. Because all living beings share a resonant heartbeat, even when we are in the city, hearing its voice can plunge us into an endless dream it weaves, tracing back to ancient, primordial melodies.

2024 RE-COMMON《Pick up Your Display Units Now》

The 2024 Luxelake Community Residents’ Co-Creation Exhibition is a showcase themed around community stories and group living. The exhibition aims to embody the concept of “everyone is a curator,” allowing residents to decide the exhibition content by teaming up with neighbors to plan and create, presenting their ideas and creativity. On July 20th, A4 hosted the event “Let’s ‘Pick’ Exhibition Tools Together” for the residents’ co-creation exhibition. Through on-site Q&A sessions and detailed resident curator manuals, participating residents learned about the exhibition schedule and the use of exhibition tools. On the day of the event, residents personally experienced and familiarized themselves with the forms and usage methods of a complete set of physical exhibition tools displayed on-site. After the event, residents will form teams with their neighbors and register to pre-book exhibition tools to showcase their own planning and creations. A new batch of “resident curators” is taking shape!

2024 RE-CONNECT《 Do fish sleep at night?》

In this fast-paced city, we’re often too busy chasing the new skyline of a skyscraper or searching for a quiet, perfectly green patch of grass. But there’s a unique feast of art that doesn’t look at these obvious beauties, but invites us to delve deeper into the often-overlooked stories of the land and the land below.

The theme comes from a story related to the water ecosystem here. Liao Bowen, an expert on the water environment of Foothill Lake, once told Noemi that his job entails monitoring the lake by boat, and that he can see the different seasons of Foothill Lake from underwater. In addition, some fish would come out of the water early in the morning to breathe, but when people came out of the water, they would no longer be visible. They will hide and dive into the depths of the lake. In the evening, you will see them again. Foothill Lake is like a life, it grows and changes, but for most of us it stays hidden.

2024 RE-SHAKE《2024 Superbroker Action Co-Creation Camp》

At A4 International Residency Center, the Super Agents are more than just local contacts and “ground companions” accompanying the creators around Chengdu. By establishing real and frequent daily contact with the creators and helping to understand the history, culture, art and food of the neighborhood and city, the Super Brokers act as guides to the creators’ senses and co-creators of their art. What they learn about local culture and life often inspires the creators during their residency in Chengdu.

On July 27th, we gathered the Super Brokers again for the second Co-Creation. Using the upcoming artists in August as a planning simulation, the Super Brokers created a specific plan for visiting and experiencing the city. On the day of the event, creators Guda & Frans and Ge Yulu came to share their past works. The creators also went camping with the Super Agents at the end of the event at Maru, the home of one of this year’s Super Agents. Coinciding with Waterman’s Day, an intense water gun fight and paddle boarding experience brought the creators and Super Agents closer together.

Starting with Signer: The Transformation of Art Forms and Systems in the 1960s-70s

In this lecture, Professor Jiang Jun led us back to the 1960s and 1970s, providing a comprehensive review of the historical context surrounding Roman’s works. By examining aspects such as artistic creation, political movements, and economic activities, the lecture offered a detailed analysis of the transformations in art forms and systems during the 1960s and 1970s. This period marked a shift from the independence and autonomy of art towards a discussion of locality and site-specificity, representing a paradigm shift towards the project-based and diversified approaches that began in the 1960s.

Artist Workshop: Exchanging Memories of Dreams

Artist Zhang Zengzeng invites you to join him at A4 Art Museum to “create dreams” together. Each participant will bring a personal dream to the roundtable, where stories will be exchanged. Afterward, a vote will determine which dream has the chance to “come true.” The artist will engage as both a “participant” and “observer,” ultimately becoming the “guide” who either helps realize or destroy the dreams of others.

Screening of the Official Roman Signer Documentary and Post-Screening Discussion – University Tour (Sichuan Fine Arts Institute)

On March 19, 2019, A4 Art Museum, in collaboration with the Sculpture Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, hosted a screening event titled “Signers Koffer.” Video and film are the primary mediums through which Roman Signer creates and showcases his work, often with his own involvement as the writer, director, and actor. The screening featured video works from 1975-1989 as well as more recent pieces, capturing scenes of everyday life that are mundane, absurd, yet filled with imaginative moments. These works, much like items packed in a suitcase, are aptly encapsulated under the name “Roman’s Suitcase.” His pieces, especially his early works, frequently employed the Super 8 camera (8mm film) and were often filmed with the help of his family. The technical limitations did not diminish the power of his work; in fact, over the years, his family and close friends became the primary audience for his art. Despite intentionally distancing himself from the mainstream art world, Signer has become a uniquely distinguished artist in Switzerland, celebrated as a national treasure. Through this hour-long screening and the subsequent discussion, participants gained a deeper understanding of Signer’s creative background, artistic trajectory, and the influence of his work.

Event Description
Roman’s Suitcase
— Screening and Post-Screening Discussion of the Official Documentary on Roman Signer (Campus Screening)

From the Swiss Alps to Eastern Poland, from Stromboli Island to Iceland, Mr. Roman’s “suitcase” travels across Europe, tracing the fascinating contours of the landscape and following a predetermined route. This journey signifies an ongoing search for his ideal place. By simply manipulating his own tools, Roman Signer masterfully presents us with a rich and subtle sense of humor. “Simple” poetry is conveyed through tools like gunpowder, fuses, kayaks, balloons, chairs, small tables, and a three-wheeled Piaggio vehicle, transporting these items into space. The psychological dangers transform into sensory stimuli, and sudden emotional collapses set the tone for an atmospheric and dramatic journey.

“Imagine the locals in Iceland seeing this without seeing us—they might turn it into a legend to tell others, that one day, there was a little table floating on that tiny volcanic crater lake.” — Roman Signer

Following the screening, artist Yu Guo and Zhang Ying, a Ph.D. candidate in Art Theory at Sichuan University, will engage in a post-screening discussion with the audience.

2023 RE-CONNECT《Suspension in Tension》Performance Art Experience

Event Description

“The magic of the elastic band lies in its tension and resilience, able to stretch up to three times its original length before breaking. It is an object that both bears and captures energy, much like our lives.”

During the performance, the elastic band stretches as the artist moves, while he cuts the ropes wound around his body one by one until the vase at the other end falls. In previous performances, the artist has emphasized the process over the outcome, leaving the fate of the vase—whether it shatters or not—an open question.

Trigger—Performance Art Workshop Final Exhibition

Exhibition Schedule
Date: September 28, 2023, 18:00-21:30
Location: A4 Art Museum (LuxeTown Mountaintop Plaza / A4 Art Museum Exhibition Hall)

Throughout the entire workshop, there has been one essential factor accompanying the body: time. In Zhou Bin’s syllabus, the timing is meticulously detailed—420 minutes each day, 15 minutes for the introduction, 20 minutes for self-introductions, 30 minutes for discussions, 15 minutes for specific exercises, and so on. The course time is precisely divided. As participants engaged in individual exercises, we observed that each person’s relationship with time was unique—slow, sporadic, and discontinuous. The time taken from contemplation to activating the body, and then to the body driving action, varied greatly among individuals. During outdoor exercises, the time spent observing others, the time of their interventions, and the timing of choosing the next space also seemed to be subtly calculated. The time spent on each participant’s physical training experience was also honestly reflected in their understanding and use of the body during the course.

These instances of time contributed to the triggering of instant power. Our bodies possess the capability for sudden enlightenment, but today, our primal sensory abilities are overwhelmed by the vast influx of external information, leading to an overloaded mind. This makes it difficult to achieve a relaxed state or fully engage in intense focus. I particularly appreciate Zhou Bin’s remark about the workshop: “The workload is heavy, requiring full mental and physical focus and concentrated attention.” A course like “Trigger” is crucial, and we eagerly anticipate this 180-minute exhibition that will take place on a single night.

Special thanks to teaching assistants Song Huiren and Yang Junfeng for their tremendous support in the “Trigger” project!

Project Coordinator: Tian Naiwei
Project Assistants: Qiu Yue, Wang Jieya

Shinji Ohmaki Solo Exhibition Closing Interactive Event: Step into Echoes · Infinity

Shinji Ohmaki Solo Exhibition Closing Interactive Event: Step into Echoes · Infinity

Event Time: November 19, 2023, 15:00-18:00
Event Location: A4 Art Museum Exhibition Hall, Echoes · Infinity (LuxeTown Mountaintop Plaza)
Participation: Entry with a valid exhibition ticket or invitation

Event Description
In the artwork Echoes · Infinity, Shinji Ohmaki, along with seven assistants, spent three weeks creating a vast field of concentric floral patterns featuring plant and animal motifs. These patterns were painstakingly layered with mineral pigments through stencils and adhered to the carpet. Over time, the patterns have undergone subtle or dramatic changes.

During the three-month exhibition period, visitors have observed the entire space from a glass walkway. On the final day of the exhibition, November 19, Shinji Ohmaki invites visitors to step off the glass walkway and into the artwork itself. Each footprint you leave may alter the work, creating new forms.

“As some things are destroyed, new ones are born. I want to express this transformation, which symbolizes the cycle of life and the eternity of existence.”

Trigger – Performance Art Workshop

 Introduction

1. What is Trigger – Performance Art Workshop For the Trigger workshop, I have this imagination:

An art gallery space, an exhibition site;
Seven or eight young artists;
Five days, seven hours a day;
Guided by the tutor, equal communication.

Through observation, explanation, discussion and practice, they will mobilise and trigger their unique perception, imagination, thinking and action, and express them in a unique way.

2. The workload is heavy, requiring physical and mental concentration and attention throughout.

The Trigger workshop has a clear course structure to ensure that each section unfolds in a gradual and targeted manner, with the goal of maximising and releasing each person’s creativity and uniqueness.

The Trigger workshop takes place in the museum’s exhibition space, so many of the topics and exercises in the course will borrow from the exhibition’s space and artwork resources in a targeted manner, forming a unique and effective interaction with them.

Trigger is not a popular performance art education workshop, and we hope that people who are interested in creating art will sign up for it. We are all students in front of art, and we look forward to sharing the harvest!
By Zhou Bin

The course consists of three parts

The ‘Trigger – Performance Art Workshop’ will be held in the gallery of ‘Gravity and Favour’, a solo exhibition by Shinji Omaki at A4 Art Museum, and many of the topics and exercises in the course will borrow the space and resources of the works in the exhibition to form a targeted interaction. Interactive. The workshop will progress through three stages.

1 Exchange and Discussion
Discussions are held throughout the course, combining the specific content of the course and the works observed to engage in dialogue and deepen theoretical understanding on many topics of performance art. Discussions are meant to clarify and strengthen each person’s individual judgement and self-awareness and cognition.

2 Practice Practice Practice
The core of the workshop is for the participants to do it physically. The exercises start from the feeling and understanding of the body and mind, from easy to difficult, the understanding and application of individual expression, interaction and cooperation, spatial and temporal elements, intervention in public space (the focus of this workshop), the working method from practice to creation, and so on, combined with the after-school assignments, and the practices are carried out.

3 Final Exhibition
The exhibition will present the participants’ individual performance works, which are essential for upgrading the gains from the exercises to the level of creativity, and for fully mastering all aspects of the process, from conception and preparation to the execution of a piece of work.

2024 RE-SALON《Employing ‘Residency’ As a Methodology》

A RE-SALON is a series of salon projects after the renewal of the A4 Residency Art Center in 2023. Based on the original “10+1” sharing model, it freely exchanges multi-field knowledge, different cultural backgrounds and life experience by how to raise an interesting question that can be discussed. It encourages daily observation, encourages a relaxed and natural discussion atmosphere, tries to break down barriers such as gender, discipline, race and culture, and concentrates the world on the ground and share it with the world.

We invite residency practitioners and observers to explore diverse perspectives and attempts of using residency as a method, based on multiple perspectives and value scales. We will still gather in our familiar living room, centering around “residency,” posing questions from various sectors, and awaiting each other’s responses.

This salon features 6 partners from different fields sharing and questioning, utilizing the “10+1” discussion model to bring forth ideas and emotions from diverse domains: art, education, hospitality, rural areas, urban neighborhoods… The dimensions of exchange are rapidly expanding.

2024 A4 Re-sidency《Open M Art Fair》abC Exhibition

A4 Residency Art Center is an interdisciplinary and open collaboration platform that takes residency as its method and perspective. We aim to explore the integration ofdiverse creative resources among communities, cities, and international partners, by tapping into local culture and international cooperation opportunities.

Sharing knowledge and experience related to residency programs, it connects various groups of values and aspirations that are community-driven. With the aim of promoting communication and interaction among interdisciplinary creatives, the platform is set against the backdrop of emerging cultural forms and structures in urban areas, inspiring and helping residents, participants, and supporters to efficiently and innovatively “use” the space and support provided by the platform. Given the diversity of scenarios covered by the term “residen- cy,” which includes tools, methods, resources, and more, it creates exchanges and links between different professional resources for participants, including but not limited to artists, scientists, writers, poets, scholars, musicians, architects, designers, brand managers, and other creators and explorers with different identities and backgrounds, promoting their communication and dialogue with communities, cities, and the world.

2024 A4 Residency 《Open Call Exhibition》

Sustainability is a hot topic at the moment. Especially in the context of globalization, ecology and national development, sustainability is constantly discussed as a common value and topic.

For A4 Residency Art Center, “Sustainability” as the theme of the year 2024 is not only presented as a proposition, but also how it responds to reality in its existence and development as a public institution, which includes different components such as the current situation of cultural institutions, diverse cooperation, and public relations.

From this point of view, this is not only a question for the majority of creators, but also a self-reflection in the process of their development and future. “Sustainability” is not just a rhetorical production of words and images, but also a constant justification of itself through various actual events.

In the studio, we will see documentation/plans of works from over 30 countries and regions, involving 50+ participants, all related to sustainability. We hope this sharing and exhibition will initiate reflections and creativity starting from our daily work and life. We invite everyone to join us in this endeavor!”

2024 RE-CONNECT 《Tone medicine》Sofa Sonata Vol.5

Life is a river that never ceases to flow, and we are all travelers crossing it.

— Henry David Thoreau

In the lengthy twilight of the summer solstice, as the sunlight filters through the slats of the blinds, casting its lingering rays within the living room, we will capture every shimmering moment of the river of life through music and imagery.

As Thoreau said, our lives are in constant flux, and with the accompaniment of music, we will explore the depths and breadth of aging, revealing the microscopic world of cellular senescence through a unique perspective, and expanding the canvas of life. When the last note of the Sofa Sonata fades away, and the final hue of the imagery vanishes, life will return to its usual course. Yet, the other side beyond the rainbow remains in our souls.

For the fifth session of A4 Sofa Sonata , we invited Dr. Bai Lin from the West China School of Medicine at Sichuan University, and Li Chuang, the music director of the Sofa Sonata, to bring us a novel experience that combines visual and auditory elements. The microscopic world forms the source of human life: blood vessels, nerves, cells, kidneys… Bai Lin reconstructs, prints, and colors tissue slices outside the organism to create images. When these images are projected in the A4 living room, accompanied by piano music that flows smoothly and occasionally jumps to match the visuals, no one can guess the true tissue origins of the images.

2024 RE-CONNECT 《The joy of consolation》Sofa Sonata Vol.4

On the occasion of May 20th approaching, the fourth installment of the Sofa Sonata invited cellist Zhao Mingwei, the principal cellist of the Sichuan Conservatory of Music Symphony Orchestra, and pianist Li Chuang, the music director of the Sofa Sonata, as well as students from the Sunflower Opera Performance Society to bring us healing and wonderful music notes. Before the event began, we welcomed residents of different ages in the community; some relaxed on the floor, some sat on sofas or around dining tables, enveloped by music in the warm light of the lounge. The entire performance included popular anime scores and also featured “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” by Ryuichi Sakamoto. At the end of the concert, before the final piece, Zhao spoke about the moving essence of music:

“The inspiration for music comes from the late Romanticism in Germany, where true love is completely incompatible with the secular world, so often love and death are similar concepts. Our understanding of death refers to the physical body, because as long as we live in this world, our bodies, our thoughts are limited by this subjective and objective binary opposition. But true love completely breaks through this body and time and space, with the two individuals eventually merging into each other, without the concept of time and space. In fact, this song describes two people completely lost in each other’s eyes, which is the dissolution I perceive, dissolving in each other’s eyes, forming an eternal existence.”

In this journey of life, time and love are ancient themes with infinite forms and expressions. They can be hidden in the silent care between family members, in the tacit support between friends, or in the goodwill of strangers. The broad concept of love and time transcends personal relationships, flowing sustainably between every living being.

Whether it’s music, art, nature, or interactions between people, they carry the power of healing and solace. As we approach the beginning of summer, in the gradually warming air, they awaken the softest part of the soul, with notes like light, faint yet far-reaching.

2024 RE-CONNECT 《Flower Island Festival Special》Sofa Sonata Vol.3

In April, we took the Sofa Sonata Vol.3 to the Flower Island Festival, expanding it to a wider outdoor space. After four o’clock in the afternoon, the intense sunlight softened, and the setting sun cast its warm glow over the grass, slopes, and lake. A circular stage with a piano attracted children, and in an instant, the performers in the center of the stage were surrounded by layers of audience.

This concert featured Wang Weizhi, a national first-class performer, the only violinist in China to hold dual doctoral degrees in violin performance, and a violinist based in Germany. He collaborated with Li Chuang, a young pianist based in the United States and the music director, as well as the children from the Snyder Youth Magic String Orchestra. Together, they presented a performance full of childlike charm and artistic appeal in the natural setting of the transition from spring to summer.

In line with the theme of this year’s Blooming Island, “Conspiracy with Happiness”, this concert at A4 Residency Art Center will present a simple and sincere musical expression. To cite as an example in the repertoire, Mozart’s “Turkish March” has a simple and rhythmic theme, with eight notes in a uniform rhythm, and sixteenth notes to enhance the liveliness, and the whole piece shows a kind of virginal simplicity.

Music has become an important bond that connects parent-child emotions and enlightens children’s minds. It was also a vivid outdoor music enlightenment, allowing participants to appreciate the beauty of nature while understanding the essence of music. We believe that artistic education and sharing should happen in daily life; children should enjoy the pleasure brought by art, rather than feeling obligated to learn a skill after listening to a performance.

2024 RE-CONNECT《A story that is gently told》Sofa Sonata Vol.2

On an early summer evening, a gentle breeze softly caresses the lemon-scented air lingering in the living room. People lounging lazily on the sofa, quietly listening, their gaze following the path of the music.

This night was poetic and tender. Mr. Yu Song brought the poetry drama “Lost Life” and the long poem “About Love and Everything It Represents” to read with the audience, and the effect of everyone’s participation is unknown, but under the music of Mr. Li Chuang, the whole rhythm does not seem exciting and abrupt, but soft and gentle, which makes people comfortable.

This is a communion of souls, a quiet exchange, rather than a clamorous expression. Bathed in the ample sunlight of the day, in the moments nurtured by the residual glow of the setting sun, the music gently brushes across the faces of each listener in the tranquil atmosphere, bringing with it coolness and serenity.

The sofa becomes an intimate concert hall, each seat holding its own story, each piece of music carrying a different significance. In this fleeting summer night, let us close our eyes together, sway with the rhythm of the notes, and wander amidst the dreamy score.

The artists and the audience sat down to talk about the fragments of the poem, deciding and choosing the mood of the music, from classical to city-pop, and the evening was fun and warm.

2024 RE-CONNECT Sofa Sonata Vol.1

At half past seven, when spring meets summer, the nights grow longer. Behind every illuminated window, countless tales unfold. Some engross themselves in literature, others in drama, while a few simply drift into idle reverie. The atmosphere becomes intricate, a melange of savoury meals and vehicular exhaust, intermingling, wafting through every nook and cranny of the city’s streets and alleys.

Music serves as the final piece to supplement the urban tapestry, weaving together these tranquil vignettes, and anchoring memories effortlessly. It evokes recollections of aimless conversations or rekindles connections with long-lost friends.

Inaugurating our living room concert series, we aspire to indulge in some romance amidst this perfectly temperate weather. Amidst the hustle, we nestle into the sofa, idly engaging within the confines of Room 1101 — a space for rendezvous, leisurely musings, and conversations enveloped by an array of voices and instruments, each crafting its own emotional narrative.

The piano serenades from the loft, perhaps not confined to a rainy day in New York but also echoing from an evening on the 11th floor in Chengdu.

2024 RE-CONNECT《A Good Mouse Premiere》 Parent-Child Drama

On June 1st, coinciding with Children’s Day, “A Good Mouse,” a play written by 2024 resident artist Yu Song, premiered at the A4 Little Theater. The story follows a little mouse named Chun Zai who, disregarding warnings about the dangers of humans and cats, leaves home and embarks on a hilarious and adventurous journey in the city. The entire story is filled with kindness and challenges, offering humor without pandering to young audiences in a childish way, thus allowing adult audiences to also think and resonate with it. The combination of three-dimensional puppets and two-dimensional shadow silhouettes on stage creates a visually rich, interesting, and layered presentation. It is hoped that parents and children who watch the performance will empathize with the story and grow together!

“The Scene of Behaviors in Progress (Part Two)” | “Following the Current”

Artist: Dong Jie
Project Introduction: The “Following the Current” project is an initiative that involves traveling upstream from the mouth of the Yangtze River to its source in Qinghai. The project is planned in three stages. In the first stage, suitable cities are selected along the route, such as Hubei, Chongqing, Sichuan, Yunnan, etc. A suitable site near the water is chosen, such as Chengdu in Sichuan Province, where the LuxeLake area is selected. Local performance artists are organized to collectively implement a live performance on-site in a manner conducive to the creators. The process is recorded on video. The second and third stages are kept confidential to protect the creative rights. Ultimately, the works from various locations are edited together to create an experimental performance video. This project also serves as an examination of the creative conditions of performance artists along the Yangtze River. Every participant in the collaborative creation is considered a co-author of the performance video, with shared rights to copyright, publicity, and distribution. The first performance of the first stage took place in Tianfu Park in Chengdu in May 2023.

The Scene of Behaviors in Progress (Part Two) |《5X4.4X2.4》

Title: “5X4.4X2.4”

Artist: QIANGMI

Project Description: The dimensions of 5×4.4×2.4 form the legally minimal scale of living space. The artist will start painting from the edge of this space and continue inward until it becomes a corner that restricts the artist’s own actions. Then, the artist can only live in this confined corner for several hours until the entire painted area is completely dry. Only then can the artist leave the space without damaging the painted area. At this point, the action concludes.

“Women’s Month Event | Tea Party for Mutual Assistance and Inquiry Among Female Friends”

Spring’s first festival is International Women’s Day. Leveraging this occasion, A4 Art Museum has invited 15 women from different industries, backgrounds, and ages as guests to join us for two tea parties this weekend. Starting from each individual’s real experiences, we would like to explore: Are “female traits” ingrained in DNA? In writing, creating, and navigating real workplaces, do these traits influence us or make us more unique? And in intimate relationships with mothers, partners, or female friends, how do we candidly be ourselves amidst the contrast with others?

In today’s atmosphere where feminist topics are penetrating our lives with irresistible force, we find that there’s still a need for practical pivots: dialogue, listening, broader connections, absorbing energy from more voices and perspectives, to bring a little strength to each “her.” We hope this tea party is just a beginning, a starting point that we’ll continuously return to.

Part I:

If there were another lifetime,

Would you still want to be a woman?

Do women inherently possess a certain feminine trait? If so, what kind of temperament is it? What’s the connection between this feminine trait and our professions?

Part II:

In intimate relationships,

How do we remain true to ourselves?

As daughters, wives, mothers… In these intimate relationships like mother-daughter and romantic partnerships, how do you understand yourself? How do you be yourself? How do you love yourself?

“The Scene of Behaviors in Progress (Part Two)” | ‘Void · Gap —— Embodied City Raum/Transient’

Artist: Dasy Project Introduction: This project is a part of the artist’s ongoing interactive painting behavior creation based on intersubjectivity. It aims to extend the project’s scope locally in Chengdu. The project focuses on embodied experiences in painting and expressions of intersubjectivity, attempting to discuss and reconstruct subjectivity through an ecological situationist approach to intersubjectivity. The project is divided into three parts: local documentation (video recording), creative feedback (creating an organic map of Chengdu), and interactive painting (public interaction).

“The Scene of Behaviors in Progress (Part One)” | “Random Fluctuations”

Part One

Title: “Random Fluctuations” Artist: Wang Xiyue Project Description: In a completely dark space, the artist engages in one-on-one interaction with the audience, perceiving them and initiating random and unpredictable interactions using the body or objects, emphasizing bodily sensations beyond visual perception for the audience.

Wang Di: There is a picture but no truth, and seeing is hard to believe

Images can be used to testify to history, but there are many issues and limitations in the process of using them. It is not necessarily true that having images means having authenticity, as the formation of images is a subjective act of humans and cannot be completely objective. Only through suspicion, criticism, and analysis of images can we truly find valuable insights and avoid biases and misguidance.

On Sunday, January 7th, exhibition advisor Wang Di will be invited to deliver an academic lecture on the methodology of “using images to testify to history” for the audience in Chengdu.

Wang Di X Sun Li: The Art Museum as a Public Space for Civic Culture

From the ubiquitous teahouses lining the streets to the parks, squares, and cultural institutions of modern life, the public spaces for cultural activities of Chengdu citizens have continuously expanded and transformed over the past century. The ongoing cross-year exhibition “Chengdu” is an independently initiated exhibition by the A4 Art Museum, aimed at discussing how contemporary Chengduans initiate cultural events, construct cultural spaces, form cultural phenomena, and create a collaborative exhibition that derives from the cultural environment.

Renowned scholar Wang Di, serving as an exhibition advisor, will engage in a dialogue with Sun Li, the curator of the A4 Art Museum, on January 6th. This conversation will delve deeper into the changes and constants in the public consciousness and public spaces of Chengdu citizens over the decades, drawing from Wang Di’s lifelong focus on micro-cultural history and Sun Li’s participation in shaping the public art museum.

A4 x KADIST |Video Library Project

Theme: Unknown Truths—A Doubt and Archaeology of Image Authenticity

With the relocation of the A4 Art Museum, we have reorganized and updated the A4 x KADIST Video Library screening program. Starting this year, we plan to invite an artist who is engaged in video research and practice to co-curate and propose an annual theme, selecting films from the KADIST video library for screening and live discussions.

For this first invitation, the curator Ran Chuxun has chosen the complexity of image authenticity as the central discussion point for this screening program. Through both online and offline formats, the program will screen experimental documentaries related to the use of archival and image footage. It explores the complex relationship between reality and fiction under the themes of “Archives and Fiction” and “Private and Public,” challenging the audience’s perceptions of the truthfulness of image documentation.

This screening project is divided into three units:

“Special Guide: Follow Sister Fu to the Exhibition”

“Special Guide” is a permanent public program at the A4 Art Museum, distinct from conventional guided tours. It grants all participants the right to share and express art.

Each session features a “special” guest from various fields, who integrates their experiences and knowledge into the guide, fostering understanding through practice and perception through sharing. This transforms viewing exhibitions into a multi-dimensional intellectual engagement.

This session of “Special Guide” welcomes a remarkably talented slash woman — Sister Fu. Her identities include, but are not limited to, a lifestyle aesthete, philanthropist, indefatigable organizer of learning initiatives, partner at Flora M, leader of the Shu Lion Art Troupe, and a speaker at TEDx Beijing 798Factory in 2018.

The Stylistic History of the Works and the Narrative of People’s Time: The New Book Release and Dialogue of “Painting Things: The Art of He Duoling”

“The Matters of Painting – The Art of He Duoling,” newly published by Shanghai Calligraphy and Painting Publishing House, takes the works exhibited in the large-scale art exhibition “The Matters of Painting – The Artistic Journey of He Duoling” held at the Chengdu Art Museum in 2022 as a clue. It compiles and edits comments, interviews, artist’s narratives, and letters related to He Duoling’s works published in public media or included in the artist’s personal albums. From the classic work “Spring Breeze Has Awakened” in 1982 to new works such as “Learning with Ye Xiao” and “Wild Garden Wall” around 2020, the book comprehensively showcases the artistic development journey of oil painter He Duoling over the past half-century. It is a documentary collection of case studies on the artist with a complete timeline and clearly defined stylistic changes.

The book concisely and comprehensively summarizes the artist’s painting techniques, styles, and conceptual changes from the 1980s to the present through a compilation of excerpts from various documents. It includes warm narratives from old friends such as Ouyang Jianghe and Zhai Yongming, as well as theoretical analyses from critics such as Li Xianting, Lu Peng, Zhu Zhu, and Yao Feng, making it rich and comprehensive. To more accurately present the artist’s contemporary value, the second half of the book presents a parallel comparison between the artist’s personal artistic chronology and a chronology of major events in Chinese cultural and artistic history from 1948 (the year the artist was born) to 2022. This intertextual relationship between the artist’s personal life and the context of the times allows readers to more intuitively feel how a cultural “celebrity” gradually moves from the present into history.

On November 18th, invited by the A4 Documentation Center, Mr. He Duoling will bring this new book to the multi-function hall on the 4th floor of the A4 Art Museum (Lushan). He will engage in an academic dialogue with Lu Peng, the editor-in-chief of “The Matters of Painting – The Art of He Duoling” and art historian, on the topic of “The Stylistic History of Works and the Narrative of Human Time.” A book signing session will also be held on site.

We will continue to share and discuss in these 4 days, showing different values and paths of thinking, through a series of art projects and public actions to weave a network of life belonging to each other.

It includes personal creation, which is also generating and connecting with external voices, the language and memory of others. Such a process contains important people and events, and it may be given in those special objects and arrangements during which people enjoy the atmosphere and time while conveying different stories.

“Keep in touch, like we’ve done any time before!”

“Special Guide: Fragment Theater – When Antiquities Meet Contemporary Art”

“Special Guide” is a permanent public program at the A4 Art Museum, which diverges from traditional guided tours by empowering all participants to share and express their perspectives on art.

Each session features a “special” guest from a different field who infuses their own experiences and insights into the guide. This approach fosters understanding through practice and perception through sharing, transforming the viewing of exhibitions into a multidimensional intellectual exchange.

In this edition of “Special Guide,” ancient porcelain shards become a significant focal point. The curators from “Conscious Condensation” will lead audiences into a “Fragment Theater,” navigating different exhibition halls and spaces where ancient porcelain serves as the key to unlocking and reinterpreting artists’ works. In the workshop segment, “Conscious Condensation” explores the beauty of ancient porcelain from the historical and cultural perspectives of Chinese ceramics. Participants will engage with these porcelain pieces through creative processes such as grinding, cutting, and drilling, transforming them into everyday objects like incense holders, candlesticks, and jewelry. This session prompts us to ponder: What new life can emerge when ancient porcelain meets contemporary art?

From Collection to Ecology – Book Launch and Dialogue for “Research on Southwestern Art Communities”

“Research on Southwestern Art Communities,” edited by Lan Qingwei and published by Shanghai Joint Publishing Company, is an artistic historical study that originated from the parallel exhibition “Urban Rivets: Art Communities in the Southwest” held during the “2021 Chengdu Biennale.” This comprehensive study collects 34 critical essays from 26 authors, including Cai Fangfang, Changping Deng, Chen Mo, Dong Yanna, Guan Yuda, Han Jing, He Libin, Lan Qingwei, Li Qi, Li Yifan, Luo Fei, Ni Kun, Ning Jia, Tian Meng, Wang Pengjie, Wang Xiaojian, Wang Yalei, Xia Yan, Yang Shu, Yin Dan, Yu Ke, Zhang Guanghua, Zhang Hui, Zhang Jianjian, Zhao Nengzhi, and Zhu Mo (listed in alphabetical order by surname). These essays comprehensively cover the study of artistic communities in southwestern regions such as Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Chongqing, allowing readers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the history and current status of artistic community development in this region through a single volume. It is a comprehensive research work on the ecological study of southwestern art.

The dialogue session, initiated by the A4 Documentation Center, will be held at 2 pm on October 28th in the multi-function hall on the 4th floor of the A4 Art Museum (Lushan).

A4AB | Bookshelf by the Door #2

This session’s theme: Joyful Moments

For this edition, A4AB has invited our friend Zeng Jie as the curator. Using the book list recommended by “The Depth of Light” exhibition artist Shinji Ohmaki as an opportunity, we are granted three chances to meet with different people. Stepping away temporarily from the current reality, we delve into niches framed by books or art, capturing clues about plants, symbols and the supernatural, and geographic exploration—threads hidden in everyday life—to reclaim our own time and enjoy a brief period of autumnal joy.

A4AB | “Trace Experiment” Printmaking Workshop

Printmaking is the art of “traces,” where different types of prints and operators can produce entirely different artistic effects. Through the use of various materials and creative methods in printmaking, viewers can understand the diverse applications of graphic and color languages. Artistic means are employed to delve into the public’s exploration of environmental awareness, with richer materials providing strong aesthetic characteristics.

Materials and images come together to form coherent compositions that clash with each other, creating a visual impact. Rich, humane, tense, and restrictive, then released—this is the artistic charm presented through the observation of the environment during the printmaking experiment process.

A4AB has invited two artists specializing in different print types, Xiao Xiao and Yang Jie, to try to establish a more open educational experiment based on their experiences in printmaking practices.

The three workshops involve silkscreen printing, water-based woodblock printing, and relief printing, using unique print forms to discover traces. A “unique print” is often referred to as “painterly print” or “printmaker’s painting,” characterized by its unique artistic nature. It removes the reproducibility inherent in printmaking and integrates the most charming unpredictability of creation. This approach re-engages with the living environment, materials used in daily life, natural environments, and natural materials.

The Trace Experiment adheres to observing the connections between people and nature. The workshop is divided into three parts, each having a progressive relationship from structured to less structured content. By building an experiential platform and offering a rich selection of materials, each workshop emphasizes maintaining curiosity about the unknown and re-engaging with familiar things.

“Special Guide: Sensing the World with A4 Old Friend Zhan Qiuyun”

“Special Guide” is a permanent public program at the A4 Art Museum, distinct from traditional guided tours. It empowers all participants to share and express their views on art. Each session features a “special” guest from a diverse field, who integrates their personal experiences and insights into the guide, fostering understanding through practice and perception through sharing. This approach transforms viewing exhibitions into a multidimensional intellectual encounter.

Trigger — Closing Ceremony of the Performance Art Workshop

Trigger and Simultaneous Triggering

“Trigger” is the decisive moment when the body rapidly reacts during an action. It is also a phased state in a performance art class, representing the body’s response to its surroundings at a particular instant. Such moments are merely beginnings, followed by more ways to “think” through the body and actions. Understanding how to trigger the body becomes crucial in contemplating the scientific and complex nature of the performance art class.

This exhibition begins with the “Trigger” performance art workshop led by the artist Zhou Bin. All participating artists are students from this workshop, which started on September 12 at 10:00 and ended on September 16 at 17:00. It lasted for five days, with seven hours each day and no breaks.

Throughout the workshop, time was a very necessary factor accompanying the body. Zhou Bin’s lesson plans meticulously noted each day’s activities: 420 minutes in total, with 15 minutes for opening remarks, 20 minutes for introductions, 30 minutes for discussions, 15 minutes for a particular exercise, and so on. The time was precisely divided. During the individual practice sessions of the students, we observed that everyone’s timing—from thinking to engaging the body to the body initiating action—was entirely unique. In outdoor exercises, the timing of observation by others, their interventions, and moving into the next spatial choice also seemed invisibly calculated. Returning to each student’s bodily training experience, their understanding and use of their bodies in the course were honestly reflected.

These periods cultivated the instantaneous power of triggering. Our bodies have the capability for sudden enlightenment, but today, our innate perception of the body is replaced by massive external information, overloading our brains. Thus, we can neither enjoy relaxed enthusiasm nor fully engage in intense concentration. I particularly like a phrase Zhou Bin used in introducing the workshop: “The workload is substantial, requiring full mental and physical focus.” Such courses like “Trigger” are profoundly important, and we look forward to this exhibition lasting 180 minutes on one evening.

Special thanks to teaching assistants Song Hui-ren and Yang Junfeng for their significant support for this “Trigger” project!

Project Planner: Tian Naiwei

Project Assistants: Qiu Yue, Wang Jieya

Trigger: Performance Art Workshop

For the “Trigger” workshop, I have this vision:

An art museum space, a live exhibition; Seven to eight young artists; Five days, seven hours each day; Guided by a mentor, with equal exchange.

Through observation, explanation, discussion, and practice, the workshop aims to mobilize and trigger each individual’s unique perceptions, imagination, thinking, and actions, and to express them in unique ways. The workload is substantial, requiring full mental and physical focus, with concentrated attention.

The “Trigger” workshop has a clear course structure to ensure that each component is progressively unfolded and targeted to promote creativity and uniqueness to the fullest extent. The workshop takes place in the exhibition space of an art gallery, so many of the issues and exercises in the course will specifically utilize the space and resources of the exhibition to form a unique and effective interaction.

“Trigger” is not a workshop for general education in performance art; it is intended for those seriously interested in pursuing artistic creation. In the face of art, everyone is a peer, and we look forward to shared gains.

The workshop will progress through three stages:

Discussion Discussions will run throughout the course, combining the specific content of the course and the works observed to engage in dialogues on various topics related to performance art, deepening theoretical understanding. The discussions aim to clarify and reinforce each individual’s judgment, self-awareness, and cognition.
Practical Exercises The core of the workshop is for participants to engage physically. Exercises begin with understanding of mind and body, progressing from easy to difficult, covering individual expression, interactive collaboration, understanding and use of temporal and spatial elements, and intervention in public spaces (a focus of this workshop), and the method of working from practice to creation, among other aspects, with practical application combined with homework.
Closing Exhibition The exhibition will showcase the individual performance pieces of the participants, which is crucial for elevating the gains from the exercises to a creative standard and comprehensively mastering all aspects of conceiving, preparing, and implementing a piece.

Solo Exhibition Opening Dialogue with Artist Shinji Ohmaki: “The Depth of Light”

On the opening day of the exhibition, we have the special privilege of hosting a profound three-way dialogue between the artist Shinji Ohmaki, curator Nanko Fumio, and writer Jie Chen. Jie Chen, drawing from her extensive experiences traveling throughout Japan, will provide a contemporary and historical cultural perspective to delve into the profound questions explored in Shinji’s works.

As the Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the A4 Art Museum, we will have the honor of moderating this discussion. This dialogue marks the first public sharing event of the exhibition, offering an opportunity to hear the artist’s personal narrative beneath the surface of his artworks. We will trace the artist’s journey of self-discovery, explore the foundations and changes of culture, and attempt to respond to the perceptual challenges and uncertainties of our contemporary era.

From a Hexahedron to a Klein Bottle – The Boundary-free Art Museum

Since the 1990s, China’s art museums have undergone a period of rapid development and diversification, with the number and scale of museums continuously expanding. Many cities have established their own art museums, and the exhibition content has become more diversified. The rise of private art museums and galleries has also injected new vitality into the entire ecosystem. However, the construction of Chinese art museums with “contemporary significance” has a history of only two decades. These two decades have been a period of mutation, with significant changes in their mechanisms, functions, and social services.

In 1997, three art museums with a certain scale, comprehensive functions, and improved operational models emerged in Guangdong, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen: Guangdong Museum of Art, He Xiangning Art Museum, and Guan Shanyue Art Museum. Almost simultaneously, the Shanghai Art Museum moved into its new building and hosted the first biennial exhibition with international significance in China in 2000 – “The Third Shanghai Biennale.”

Over a century of systematic and standardized operations in the art museum system, museum studies have also undergone a difficult process from struggling forward to systematization and disciplinary specialization. Currently, it faces a transition from a mature system to self-reflection and critical skepticism, exhibiting a trend of exploring new models from traditional ones. Reflection on practical issues also demonstrates open thinking, comprehensive methods, and interdisciplinary perspectives. “New Museum Studies” needs to consider the impact of the “language shift” on art museums. The issues it involves include three levels: “human” as the subject; multi-directional “space”; institutional criticism and power reflection. “New Museum Studies” is a cross-cultural study based on institutional research. It must critically focus on the practical operational issues of art museums and also pay attention to institutional issues in the process of museum operations. It is not stable but reflective. It is situated in the critical field, requiring critical thinking; it considers the symbiotic and restrictive relationship between power fields, political fields, and artistic platforms, and pays special attention to the concept of multiculturalism with contemporary significance.

The art museum is a space for discussing cultural products and social issues. As a force, it has given birth to the diversified development of China’s artistic ecology and more open dialogue and exchange. Therefore, we hope to launch an empirical discussion focusing on “human,” publicness, and participation based on the practices of different institutions and individuals. This forum includes the following four sections: 1. The Flowing Ecosystem: Art Museums, Communities, and Participatory Actions; 2. Art Museum Education and Local Expression from a Public Perspective; 3. New Museum Studies and Theoretical Development in Co-construction; 4. Future-oriented Art Museum Institutions and Operational Practices. We will explore the social role and positioning of art museums, as well as the ways they promote knowledge production. In the process of continuously seeking contemporary significance, we will further demonstrate the continuous updating of their own thoughts and theories.

World 3: Art History and Art Institutions

Art institutions are universities without walls, bridging different research interests and methodologies, and building a platform for scholars and artists to exchange ideas. Publishing is a comprehensive artistic endeavor that forms an organic whole with other components. Art history is both a history and an art, and its collaboration with institutions is not just a generational task, but an optimistic attitude and aspiration. World 3 is colorful, and I am grateful to all colleagues who have worked diligently towards this ideal.

Series of Lectures on the Construction and Methodology of Documentation Libraries – Exploring Chengdu’s Contemporary Art Through the Asian Art Documentation Archive

Over the past two decades, the Asian Art Documentation Archive (AAA) has established a rich and unique archive of contemporary Chinese art materials, which has been utilized by researchers and academic institutions around the world. AAA places particular emphasis on topics overlooked by mainstream discussions, such as the artistic diversity fostered by regional cultures. This lecture will take Chengdu’s contemporary art as an example to introduce the research resources and utilization methods of the Asian Art Documentation Archive. It will also discuss issues related to regionalized art history, such as the countereffects of globalization on art history, the relativity of local boundaries, and how to respond to the fragmentation of values.

Hi, Artist: Tetra Pak Line Etching Workshop

Etching is an important medium in James Jean’s creative process. Intaglio, one of the four major types of printmaking—intaglio, relief, planographic, and stencil—features detailed imagery and has always been favored by artists. However, the traditional use of metal plates in intaglio requires specialized printmaking equipment, techniques, and environments, which greatly limits its accessibility.

Through the exploration and practice with materials by printmaking artists, it has been discovered that everyday materials such as Tetra Pak cartons—commonly used for milk and juice—can be utilized for intaglio printing. These cartons can be cut into any shape and used with drypoint etching and ink wiping techniques to achieve the effects of intaglio printing. This method overcomes the difficulties of cutting metal plates and offers a richer artistic experience.

Hi! Artist: Font Play Workshop

In font design, a set of characters shares certain structural features and details. This workshop starts by deconstructing everyday objects, boldly breaking existing patterns to create new shapes for English letters. It explores the diverse possibilities of material usage.

We’ll use 3D material structures in the form of spray painting, integrating them into flat compositions to create a spray-painted font poster.

This Font Play Workshop starts from objects around you, encouraging participants to break free from conventional thinking. By analyzing, deconstructing, and reassembling from multiple perspectives, we’ll explore various possibilities of material usage.

Using spray painting to capture the 3D material structures into flat compositions, we’ll ultimately create a spray-painted font poster to conclude the workshop.

Series of Lectures on the Construction and Methodology of Documentation Libraries — Why Do It? How to Do It? UP-ON Behavioral Art Archive

One of the 2023 series of lectures on the construction and methodology of documentation libraries organized by the A4 Documentation Center, this series will invite documentation professionals and institutions to share their insights on the methods and working mechanisms of constructing documentation libraries. We will also revisit the networked relationship between documentation and archives, explore how to establish links between documentation resources and individuals, and build a platform for exchange and research.

For this session, we have invited Zhou Bin, the founder of the UP-ON Behavioral Art Archive, who will share with us his insights on the reasons for establishing the archive, its survival strategies, positioning and project planning, as well as its current status.

2023A4 Art Book Fair

A4AB is an annual public project initiated by A4 Art Museum in 2022 with “book” as its core. By establishing a focused dialogue with the art publishing industry, creative groups and the general public in China and abroad, the museum is committed to exploring the value and public nature of art creation in the context of contemporary art. The project also aims to promote the popularization of art and cross-cultural exchanges in southern China, establish a consensus and active art creation attitude, and build an effective relationship network and systematic support platform for diversified creators.

A4 Art Book Fair 2023 received a total of 182 groups/position of exhibitors’ submissions from 25 domestic provinces/municipalities/overseas, and 77 exhibitors were finally selected and participated in the ‘Reading Square’ section on the first floor. It is worth noting that on top of last year’s 3-floor exhibition hall space, this year’s special outdoor exhibition area by the lake was also added.

Special Guided Tour: “Mustard Seed in the Universe”, Automata Mechanical Device Workshop

Artist Giacometti always seeks to liberate painting from its conventional visual associations, aiming for novel and unfamiliar experiences. Phenomenology in art opens up new perspectives on discussing “independent parts” without explicitly showing viewpoints, suggesting that experiencing art goes beyond mere visual encounters. Perhaps enlightenment in Zen and the mundane world are two sides of the same coin, much like pondering over which is more all-encompassing: a mustard seed or Mount Sumeru. Everything within reach in our daily lives seems to be able to relate to exhibitions, where small things reflect larger ideas.

In exhibitions, we experience the dual qualities of sculpture and painting: instantaneousness and eternity. The artist captures moments in the painting, where the medium and creative thoughts intertwine to freeze the ephemeral flashes of inspiration. Once the artwork is completed, its solid materiality preserves the artist’s inspiration and skill, becoming a vessel for their thoughts. When the work is displayed in the exhibition hall, it interacts with different viewers, potentially sparking interesting new interpretations.

Against the backdrop of artificial intelligence like ChatGPT bringing new possibilities to various industries in the New Year, artist Classical proposes using the unique medium of “mechanical transmission devices” to create together with the audience. The aim is to lead participants in creating MINIAUTOMATA works using simple materials and easy-to-master transmission mechanisms, traversing the exhibition hall, and crafting a completely new mode of exhibition experience based on the artists’ works in the exhibition. Starting from automata, participants will engage in hands-on creation, finding the extraordinary in the ordinary through their own efforts.

Automata (mechanical devices) will be our new creation during the exhibition period. Just like the name of the exhibition, “Incredible Actions,” every casual idea is worth recording and preserving. “Mustard seed and Mount Sumeru, I alone know.” Hopefully, this self-creating device can become your inspiration catcher, perhaps bringing you joy and surprise beyond the ordinary.

“Special Guided Tour: A Dance with Fluid Bodies”

When individuals find themselves stuck in a quagmire, both body and soul feel bound. The ups and downs of academics, changes in emotions, fatigue from work… All the uncertainties of life can tie us down, making our breaths shallow. In this springtime, we strive to find an outlet, letting emotions dance with our bodies and gently carried away by the wind. The trivialities of life accumulate into the past, sketching the outline of tomorrow.

Would you like to have a springtime rendezvous at the art museum? “Extraordinary Guided Tour: A Dance with Fluid Bodies” awaits your participation. The creative process and spontaneous movements themselves can promote new experiences at various levels such as individual physical, emotional, psychological, cognitive, and interpersonal realms.

A4 Valentine’s Day Special Event: Action! Start Shooting/Rehearsing!

Can someone fall in love in 24 hours?

Is 24 hours too short or too long for someone to fall in love?

Although not everyone needs to ask this question, and Valentine’s Day doesn’t necessarily require spending 24 hours together, the concept of “love” has troubled humanity for thousands of years.

So, how does real “love” quietly descend upon us? Perhaps it shouldn’t be confined to clichés like “mundane daily life.” It’s always a moment, a moment accompanied by an unexpected gesture. It’s the frequency of your vocal cords vibrating, slowly uttering those words everyone says when faced with love: “I love you.”

In love, the message conveyed by the voice transcends all obstacles of time and space. This Valentine’s Day, A4 Art Museum and the Swiss Cultural Foundation are launching a special event where we interpret the essence of love through sound.

Reflections on the Ecology of Chinese Contemporary Art: Faith-Based Economy and Art Museums

Amid discussions about domestic circulation, we also hope to re-examine the ecology of Chinese contemporary art over the past 40 years, as well as the fragmented artistic beliefs and art market today. Only when the people are unified and participate in constructing and pricing Chinese contemporary culture alongside the nation, enabling a unified narrative for the story of contemporary art, can collections from national art museums, private art museums, individual collectors, and corporate foundations achieve networking and converge towards a consensus-based and diverse value system. Then, a unified domestic art market can be formed, allowing us to discuss the next step of fostering confidence in and exporting national culture.

Criticism of Criticism: A Research Methodology and Case Study on Chinese Art Criticism in the 20th Century

The traditional approach to criticism research often focuses on the compilation of critical history and the logical construction of critical theory. However, “criticism of criticism,” also known as “meta-criticism,” strives to treat criticism as an independent discipline and conduct fundamental research on it. This involves exploring the types of criticism, methods of criticism, subjects of criticism, the inherent forms of criticism, as well as its shaping within the context of social history, culture, and ideology. This lecture will begin with a traditional approach to criticism research, elucidating the significant value of “criticism of criticism” as a methodology for criticism research. It will enumerate its problem perspectives and, in conjunction with Chinese art criticism in the 20th century, briefly outline the application of “criticism of criticism” in specific research.

A series of questions about the artist’s book

The mention and recognition of artist’s books in China emerged during the fragmented information era. Understanding formed under such reading methods often tends to be somewhat one-sided, posing significant challenges to the development of better art publishing. Faced with a vast and complex cultural background and numerous art practitioners, besides the scenes gathered by art publishing, there is still a need to supplement more daily places for retracing, researching, and discussing.

We also regard questioning as a perspective, gradually forming a relaxed bond through the generation, deepening, and divergence of questions. “A series of questions about artist’s books” was first introduced in October 2022 with three questions:

How do you envision the relationship between physical action and books?

How can art institutions use publishing as a method in their planning?

What are the individual differences and contextual relationships in the study of artist’s books?
